A chief executive officer (CEO) is the highest-ranking executive in a company that reports to the Board of Directors. CEOs have many responsibilities including setting up and executing an organization’s strategy, finding the funding to run the company, and building and overseeing the executive team. With all these responsibilities, how do CEOs sleep and function to run successful companies? Here are perspectives on CEOs and their personal input on sleep routines.

Jeff Bezos

Jeff Bezos is the founder and executive chair of Amazon, the owner of The Washington Post, and the founder of the space exploration company Blue Origin. If Jeff is not busy running multiple companies, he is also a father to four children. However, Jeff prioritizes his day that allows him to get adequate rest and sleep.

Here are Jeff’s routines:

  • Go to bed early
  • Wake up early
  • Ease into the day instead of feeling rushed
    • Read the newspaper
    • Drink coffee
    • Breakfast with his kids
  • First meeting starts at 10 and no time sooner
  • All high IQ meetings need to be done before lunch
  • 8 hours of sleep a night because he thinks better, has more energy, and is in a better mood.

Jess also made a statement for people to consider when it comes to giving up sleep for work. He asked “As a senior executive, you get paid to make a small number of high quality decisions. Your job is not to make thousands of decisions every day. Is that really worth it? If the quality of the decisions might be lower because you’re tired or grouchy or any number of things?”

Sleep Routines of CEOs

Some well known CEOs have the mentality to wake up by 4:30 a.m. and seize the day. They believe that when you are unsure how to deal with problems, you should get up extremely early and tackle it head on. However, there is a lot of evidence to the contrary and waking up early is not for everyone because of an individual’s circadian rhythm. Regardless of how hard you try, your body is just not capable of functioning that early in the day. Michael J. Breus (clinical psychologist and sleep medicine expert) recommends learning into your chronotype rather than just trying to recreate the habits of early birds who only make up 15% of the population. Breus also recommends that if you are someone who is naturally a late riser but works traditional hours, you should hold off on caffeine until 11 a.m. and take full advantage of the natural sunlight with a morning walk to wake you up.

Here are some people who have successfully manage and create while working late and getting up early:

  • Aaron Levie- CEO of enterprise cloud company BOX. He goes to sleep at 3 a.m. and wakes up no earlier than 10 a.m. His morning routine includes laying in bed for 30 minutes in the morning checking email.
  • Alexis Ohanian- Reddit co-founder and husband of Serena Williams. He wakes up at 10 a.m. His tip is not to have the computer in the bedroom.
  • Pharrell Williams- American singer-songwriter and fashion designer. He does not use an alarm clock to wake himself up but rather relies on his body’s natural sleep habits. Everyday, he answers phone calls from 10:30-Noon. Then, enters the studio between 12-1 and works until 9-11.
  • Warren Buffet- Berkshire Hathaway CEO. He usually gets 8 hours of sleep and has no desire to et to work at 4 in the morning.
  • Vlad Tenev- CEO of Robinhood (stock trading app). He usually gets four hours of sleep a night. He also sleeps fewer hours of sleep on the weekdays and makes up for it on the weekends.

Sam Altman from Open AI made a statement in 2018 about sleep. He claims “sleep seems to be the most important physical factor in productivity for me.” However, the CEO still considers himself a “bad sleeper” in general and an even worse sleeper when traveling.
