L- tryptophan is an amino acid that is made from plant and animal sources. L-tryptophan is known as an “essential” amino acid because the body does not produce it. Naturally, it is found in red meat, poultry, eggs, and dairy. After the body absorbs L-tryptophan, it eventually becomes a hormone called serotonin and is then converted into another important molecule- melatonin. Serotonin transmits signals between your nerve cells and also constricts blood vessels. The amount of serotonin in the brain can affect (in the brain specifically) it influences sleep, cognition, and mood. People have used L-tryptophan to assist in relief from uncomfortable PMS symptoms, sleeplessness, and more.

Research has examined the effects of altering blood levels of tryptophan. Researchers changed the levels of tryptophan in participants by having them consume large amounts of amino acids, with and without tryptophan. In one particular study, 15 healthy adults were sent to a stressful environment twice (once when they had normal tryptophan levels and once when they had low levels). The researchers found that feelings of anxiety, tension, and feelings of nervousness were higher when the participants had low tryptophan levels. Based on these results, low levels of tryptophan could contribute to feelings of anxiety and also aggression and impulsiveness in aggressive individuals.

Impact on Sleep

Once serotonin has been produced from tryptophan in the body, it can be converted into melatonin. Melatonin influences the sleep-wake cycle in the body and can improve sleep quantity and quality. Several studies have shown that increasing tryptophan in the diet can improve sleep by increasing melatonin.

Research has been conducted to show the effectiveness of L-tryptophan on individuals with sleep problems. In one particular study, researchers looked into the effects of taking L-tryptophan supplements twice a day (once at night and once in the morning). The results showed that participants greatly increased their melatonin levels and as a result had improved sleep-wake cycle regulation and slept better.

If you are looking for a supplement for better sleep and are looking to increase your melatonin levels, consider taking L-tryptophan for sleep!
