L- tryptophan is an amino acid that is made from plant and animal sources. L-tryptophan is known as an “essential” amino acid because the body does not produce it. Naturally, it is found in red meat, poultry, eggs, and dairy. After the body absorbs L-tryptophan, it eventually becomes a hormone called serotonin and is then converted into another important molecule- melatonin. Serotonin transmits signals between your nerve cells and also constricts blood vessels.
