Discovering the fascinating world of lucid dreaming! What is it and how can you start to lucid dream?

Have you ever dreamed of flying, traveling to a luxury location, or meeting someone you’ve always wanted to; what if we told you this could be possible?

This may be a topic that you have heard of. Lucid dreaming. A phenomenon where a person will become aware that they are dreaming while being in a dream. Having a consciousness that allows you to experience all that your dream world can offer.

What is the point of lucid dreaming?

Being able to experience your inner world during dreaming can be of great interest to some. When lucid dreaming, you have control of what occurs. It can be thought of as a video game; you can do things you would not normally be able to in the real world.

This concept has become so sought after that the practice of lucid dreaming has become more common than ever before.

When do lucid dreams happen?

There are multiple sleep cycles that the body undergoes when sleeping; the one where lucid dreaming is said to occur is the fourth sleep stage, REM sleep. Rapid Eye Movement is the cycle that the body enters after around 90 minutes of sleep. This stage is where the body is most active in:

  • Brain activity: The brain is most active during REM sleep. When studied, these waves observed show high-frequency and low-amplitude patterns.
  • Vivid dreams: The most vivid and intense dreaming occurs in REM sleep. The dreams tend to be the most story-like and bizarre during this time. In this case, lucid dreaming.
  • Eye movements: Eye movement, as part of the name is prominent during REM sleep, these movements are associated with dream activity.
  • Muscle paralysis: During REM sleep muscle paralysis occurs which helps to prevent us from acting out our dreams.
  • Physiological changes: Heart rate, breathing, and blood pressure, all can be affected during REM sleep.

How to lucid dream

There are techniques that can be performed to help move you along the lucid dreaming process. These methods are some of the most common. Keep in mind this is not a simple thing to do.

  • Reality checks: Reality checks should be performed throughout the day to make sure that you are awake or dreaming. Examples of these include looking at your hands, checking the time, physically touching your palm, and more. This practice helps to prepare yourself for understanding whether you are lucid dreaming or not.
  • Keeping a dream journal: This is said to help improve recollection of the dream so you can easily identify characters, symbols, and even themes. Keep one next to your bed and write these as soon as you awake so you can recognize when dreaming.
  • Set intentions: One of the keys to lucid dreaming is your intentions. Setting intentions (affirmations or visualizations) can help to put your mind in the right spot before dreaming. This can also help you to be more aware that you are in a dream.
  • Wake-Back-To-Bed (WBTB): This technique involves waking up after 4-6 hours of sleep. During this time you will stay awake for a short period and engage in reading subjects of lucid dreaming or meditating. After, you will set the intention to lucid dream.
  • Reality testing in dreams: This process involves testing for reality checks while dreaming. If something strange happens in the dream, perform a reality check. This will help to show you whether you are lucid dreaming or not.
  • Mnemonic induction of lucid dreams (MILD): This technique involves waking up after hours of sleep, recalling a recent dream, and then visualizing yourself becoming lucid while going back to sleep. This involves thinking or saying things like “The next dream I have I will remember.” This can help to increase the chances of lucid dreaming.

It is important to note that there are some risks of lucid dreaming. While this sort of practice can be fun and fascinating, if done too much, sleep schedules can be altered. Be sure to have your fun every now and then, but be sure to still put aside time for needed sleep.
