We need immunity to fight against diseases. When the body is weak, infections are susceptible which put a strain on the body. So how can you build your immune system? Well, sleep is an excellent place to start.

Defending the body during periods of weakness and sickness is the main role of the immune system. Daily life can interfere with the effectiveness of the immune system. This can range from what you eat, to how much you exercise, and especially how much you sleep.

Let’s dive into all things immunity.

Different types of immunity

If you didn’t know, there are actually 3 types of immunity.

  1. Innate: Innate immunity is immunity that is present after being born. It is the first response of the body’s immune system.
  2. Adaptive: Adaptive immunity is an acquired immune system. The immune system is full of special cells that are meant to kill pathogens before they can grow.
  3. Passive: Passive immunity is short-term immunity.

Why a healthy immune system is important

No one likes to be sick. The presence of sickness requires a lot of work to fight against the repercussions. It is not as simple as going on with your day as you previously were.

Circling back to the scare of the pandemic, COVID-19 had brought an argument for a strong immune system. Before it was known to cause more damaging effects on the body, it was assumed that COVID-19 was as threatening as a cold.

After signs of sickness became more prevalent, many started to consider the levels of immunity they had in their bodies.

NPR published an article in which studies conducted found “…Evidence of ‘Superhuman’ Immunity To COVID-19…” Some possessed an immune system so strong that it possessed antibodies that fought against the effects of COVID-19.

“Their bodies produce very high levels of antibodies, but they also make antibodies with great flexibility — likely capable of fighting off the coronavirus variants circulating in the world but also likely effective against variants that may emerge in the future.”

In cases such as this, a strong immune system helped some to feel the effects of COVID-19 much less severe than others. This is a bit convincing, yes? A strong immune system is one of the best things to have.

Diseases, viruses, parasites, and bacteria, all are responsible for sickness; a healthy immune system can defeat such sickness.

Three types of immunity.

How can I achieve a healthier immune system?

Luckily, there are ways to improve the immune system:

  • Regular exercise
  • Healthy diet
  • Better Sleep
  • Avoiding alcohol

Making an effort to avoid or do more of what has just been listed will set you on the right path to a healthier immune system. Allow us to explain.

Exercise

Physical exercise/activity is fantastic for the body. Especially when it comes to immunity. Exercise helps in all areas such as:

  • Mood
  • Immunity
  • Decrease in the risk of disease
  • Brain Health
  • Concentration/ focus
  • Weight loss

So how does it affect immunity? Well, when you exercise, white blood cells are created. White blood cells are meant to fight against bacteria and viruses. White blood cells are consistently produced when sick. They are also able to detect sickness much earlier, therefore fighting much earlier, protecting the body.

Cardio is known for helping the health of the heart as well. So even if you are not into gyms, a run or long walk can help to fulfill that needed cardio.

Diet

The body needs certain nutrients to remain healthy. If those nutrients aren’t being consumed in some way, sickness is more prevalent. Some immune system booster foods are:

  • Citrus fruit (Oranges, lemons, grapefruit, etc.)
  • Broccoli
  • Spinach
  • Ginger
  • Almonds
  • Green Tea
  • Hot lemon tea
  • Hot lemon and ginger tea

All listed provide nutrients and vitamins to the body that help to improve immunity. Think of when you get the common cold; a good hot tea and antioxidants are just what the doctor ordered.

Sleep

Sleep is one of the largest factors that affect the effectiveness of the immune system. Sleep has the power to do many things when sick.

Cytokines are key. Cytokines are proteins that contribute to the growth of both the immune system and blood cells. Those white blood cells we mentioned earlier? They are created through cytokines. Known as T-cells, they are crucial for the fight against sickness.

The more sleep you get, the more cytokines are created. In general, you may notice that when sick you feel much more drowsy, that is because the body cannot fight as hard to operate when sick. Cells are much more stressed.

Need to get into a good habit of sleep? Might as well prepare for the next cold/flu season. Luckily for you, we offer two fantastic products to help you get into a healthy routine. Avoid alcohol

Alcohol can be very damaging to a lot of things, including the immune system. Alcohol can negatively affect all areas such as:

  • Sleep habits
  • Weight gain
  • Brain Health
  • Liver health
  • Blood pressure

And more. The best rule of thumb is to avoid alcohol on a daily basis. Every now and then for celebration purposes will not hurt you but if your goal is a healthy immune system, avoid excessive use.

Why? Well, alcohol affects good bacteria as well as antibodies. The things we need to fight against disease are negatively affected by heavy consumption of alcohol. Regardless, for a healthy lifestyle in general, it is best to keep alcohol to a minimum.

Cytokines.
