Do you ever feel more tired in certain parts of the day? Do you ever feel big bursts of energy in some moments and then barely able to keep your eyes open in others? Have you ever wondered why that is? This all comes from your body’s need for sleep or also known as your body’s sleep drive. Your sleep drive is broken down by two systems: the sleep/wake homeostasis and your circadian rhythm.
Sleep/Wake Homeostasis and Circadian Rhythm
Sleep/wake homeostasis describes that the longer you are awake, the greater your body senses the need to sleep. If this process stood alone, then you would have the most energy when you wake up in the morning and would be the most tired and sleep at the end of the day. However, it does not stand alone and your circadian rhythm also plays a part. Circadian rhythm is your sleep-wake pattern over the course of a 24-hour day. Your circadian rhythm is influenced by light and dark and other important factors. Your brain receives environmental indicators that activate certain hormones, alter your body temperature, and regulate your metabolism to keep you alert or help you to sleep. The combination of sleep/wake homeostasis and circadian rhythm control your sleeping and waking periods. When these patterns are not how they are supposed to be, it not only affects your sleep, but it can also affect other parts of your body such as:
- Blood pressure
- Body temperature
- Hormonal balance and secretion
- Digestion
- Metabolic balance
- Alertness and cognition
- Cell repair
- Immune system
- Musculoskeletal health
Resetting Your Circadian Rhythm
If you think your circadian rhythm is disrupted, there are signs that are noticeable throughout your day. These signs may include trouble falling asleep, staying asleep, or both, excessive daytime sleepiness, exhaustion, decreased alertness, problems with memory or concentration, general aches and pains, stomach problems, impaired judgment, or risky behavior. After taking the time to understand your circadian rhythm, there are ways to reset it and make it more functional if these problems are occurring for you:
Have a routine: Choose a time to go to bed and stick with it. Be as close as your schedule allows to maintain that time.
Exercise: This helps with melatonin production, which can help you sleep and helps your body’s other system sync with your circadian rhythm.
Avoid alcohol and caffeine in the evening: Caffeine is a stimulant that can keep you awake late in the evenings. While alcohol makes you drowsy in the moment, it can affect your circadian rhythm in the long run.
Limit screen time: Keep your technology out of your bedroom when you are unwinding from the day. The blue light in technology restricts the production of melatonin and leads to a disruption in your circadian rhythm. Avoid screens at least 30 minutes before you sleep.
Avoid naps: By taking a nap, it becomes harder to fall asleep at night. If you have to take a nap, make sure it is 30 minutes or less and occurs before 3 p.m.
Using Relaxium Sleep
Relaxium Sleep uses a triple-action approach to sleep better: regulating your sleep cycle, relaxing your body and calming your mind. It regulates your sleep cycle by using ONLY the highest quality and proper levels of Melatonin (a drug free hormone, but in this case it is also free of the contaminants often found in low-quality melatonin). It relaxes your body with the use of magnesium (a mineral that immediately relaxes muscles throughout the body and promotes the release of mental and physical tension). It calms your mind with the combination of Ashwagandha (a plant extract), Valerest (a proprietary ingredient exclusive to Relaxium) and Passionflower (a herb that offers an anti-stress remedy that helps to combat with everyday stress and regulate neurotransmitters in the brain that control mood and sleep). With this triple-action approach, you can expect to experience:
- An easier time falling and staying asleep
